Third Molar Removal Surgery
By the age of eighteen, the average adult has 32 teeth; 16 teeth on the top and 16 teeth on the bottom. The teeth in the front of the mouth (incisors, canine and bicuspid teeth) are ideal for grasping and biting food into smaller pieces.
The back teeth or molar teeth are used to grind food up into a consistency suitable for swallowing. Given the size of the average persons jaw, there is more often then not inadequate space to accommodate all these teeth.
Since wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt into the mouth, they are the ones that suffer the consequences.
Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt within the mouth. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, they do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, this is not common. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone (impaction). Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to erupt successfully.

These poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. When they are partially erupted, the opening around the tooth allows bacteria to grow and will eventually cause an infection. The result: swelling, stiffness, pain and illness.
The bacteria that grow in these areas may lead to the development of gum disease in other areas of the mouth, and more and more evidence suggests that they are associated with the development of other diseases and conditions of the body.
Many believe that the pressure from the erupting wisdom tooth may move other teeth and disrupt their alignment. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom tooth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth.
Removal of the offending impacted tooth or teeth usually resolves these problems. Early removal is recommended to avoid such future problems and to decrease the surgical risk involved with the procedure. Further, young patients heal faster and more completely.

I had my wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Rafetto. I had a really great experience with him & his team. I chose to only use nitrous oxide as an anesthetic, which worked very well to calm me during the procedure, yet left me with no side effects afterwards. The procedure was quick, and the team supplied me with everything I needed for post-op care. I had minimal swelling and healed quickly. I would highly recommend choosing Dr. Rafetto to anyone for this procedure!
