Meet Louis K. Rafetto, DMD

Biography
Dr. Rafetto grew up in nearby Pennsylvania where he graduated from Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School.
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with High Honors from the University of Delaware, he received his dental degree with Magna Cum Laude honors from Temple University School of Dentistry.
He then completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training at The Medical Center of Delaware in 1980 and received certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons 1983.
Dr. Rafetto was President of the American Associaton of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (2015- 2016). He serves as Vice-Chairperson of the Oral and maxillofacial Surgery Foundation (education and research) and as a member of the Committee on Education for the Osteo-Science Foundation 9regenerative medicine).
He continues to be involved in post-graduate education, serving as Director of Surgical Implantology and Alveolar Reconstruction for the Oral and Maxillofacial Residency Program at Christiana Care Health Systems, where he also serves as Chairman of the Department.

Professional Activities
Dr. Rafetto was President of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons’ (2015 – 2016). Over the years, he has chaired several AAOMS Committees including the committee that develops all continuing education programs.
He has also served in a variety of leadership positions on both the state and national levels.
Dr. Rafetto has been an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (the group that grants board certification to the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery) and served as co-chairman for the development of a portion of the examination.
Dr. Rafetto also authored several chapters for textbooks as well as articles published in national and international journals. Recently, he edited a textbook on the topic of Contemporary Third Molar Management.
He is also a reviewer for the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and for the Oral Medicine/Oral Surgery/Oral Pathology Journal.
On the local level, he is the Chairman of the Delaware Institute for Dental Education and Research, a Governor’s appointed committee that addresses issues of limited access to care in the state of Delaware.
He has served as President of the Delaware Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for more than 20 years and has also served as President of the Delaware State Dental Society. He has also been elected to a number of national and international Honor Societies.
Other Activities
Dr. Rafetto is an active member of Health Volunteers Overseas and has lectured and volunteered surgical services in a number of countries including those in:
- Asia
- India
- South and Central America
- and Haiti.
Family
Dr. Rafetto is the very proud father of two college students and has been active in youth sports at a variety of levels for over 20 years.
